"Surf's Up" is a surfing-themed special episode of The Backyardigans from the first season. This was the thirteenth episode aired in Canada and the twelfth episode to be broadcast the United States. CharactersSummary"Rad Afro-Pop music kicks in as Surfing trio Pablo, Tyrone and Uniqua get some unexpected help from Mystery Lifesaver Austin to search for the perfect waves at Tiki Beach!" PlotPablo is in the backyard, pretending to surf on the picnic table, and introduces himself to the viewer as Surfer Pablo. He then sings "Surf's Up, Ho Daddy" as he pretends to surf. Pablo also explains that surfers are always looking for the perfect waves, which are hard to find. But he's heard of a place called Tiki Beach where it has them. He doesn't know where it is, but he knows how to find it: to find something on Tiki Beach that looks like the tiki charm he pulls out. The camera then moves to the brown wooden fence, where Austin is peeking out from the door, eavesdropping on the scene. He tells the viewer that Pablo has much to learn before getting to Tiki Beach, and Austin knows where it is because he is Austin, the Mystery Lifeguard. After Austin leaves, the backyard transforms into a beach as Pablo starts looking for Tiki Beach. He then realizes that the beach he and Austin are on right now is not Tiki Beach since it doesn't have anything that looks like his tiki charm. Pablo hops in and drives his dune buggy but doesn't know which way to go. He then spots a lifeguard, so he drives and walks to him. Pablo asks where Tiki Beach is, and Austin, the lifeguard, misleads Pablo and tells him to go right and look for tall palm trees. As Pablo cruises to Tall Palm Beach, Austin tells the viewer that he tricked them into going elsewhere because he thinks Pablo doesn't know the moves yet; therefore, Pablo is not ready to go to Tiki Beach yet. Pablo sings "Cruisin' the Dunes" as he drives to a beach with tall palm trees. He meets Tyrone and asks the moose if he is at Tiki Beach. Tyrone answers no and says that this is Tall Palm Beach, and the beach got its name by having so much tall palm trees. Pablo asks Tyrone if he has rad surf moves, and Tyrone answers yes. He demonstrates his moves while singing "Rad Moves." Pablo invites Tyrone to ride in his dune buggy with him, which Tyrone accepts. They spot another lifeguard and ask where Tiki Beach is. The lifeguard tells to them and leads them in the wrong direction, telling them to look for pink sand. As they leave, the lifeguard reveals himself to be Austin and tells the viewer that he tricked them again because he thinks they still not have the moves for Tiki Beach yet. He then sings "Mystery Lifeguard." Pablo and Tyrone reach a beach with pink sand. They meet Uniqua and ask her if this is Tiki Beach. Uniqua tells them that it is not Tiki Beach but Pink-Sand Beach. They ask her if she has any rad moves, and she demonstrates them as she sings "Rad Moves." They then spot another lifeguard driving in, and the surfers ask where Tiki Beach is. The lifeguard tells them they will find Tiki Beach close by if they head left, but Pablo realizes he is the same lifeguard he met from the beginning. The trio follows him in Pablo's dune buggy as they sing "Cruisin' the Dunes," unaware that they drove away from Tiki Beach. They follow Austin to Tiki Beach but not realize that it is Tiki Beach. Pablo's tiki charm pulls him forward, frightening him. His two friends try to pull him backward, but the tiki charm keeps pulling because it's so strong. They get the jewelry off of him, but it lands near a tiki. Pablo picks it up and sees the Tiki Beach tiki. He then knows that they have succeeded. Austin appears and says to the surfers that he is also the guardian of Tiki Beach, and he drove them out of the way, for they learned all the surfing moves and are ready to surf. They surf the waves and show off their moves while singing "Surf's Up, Ho Daddy." After surfing, Pablo's stomach gurgles, and he admits that surfing the perfect wave has made him hungry. Pablo invites everyone over for grilled cheese (cheese toasties in the UK dub) at his house, where in they all accept as the beach transforms back into the backyard. Afterward, the four sing the end song and enter Pablo's house. Pablo then opens the previously closed door and shouts, "Cowabunga!" before reclosing it. Roles
